Durrës is one of the oldest cities in the Adriatic, and its headline sight is the Roman amphitheatre, about a kilometre from the hotel: built in the second century, it is among the largest in the Balkans and still half-buried under the modern town. From there it is a short walk to the Byzantine city walls, the Venetian tower now used as a bar, and the Archaeological Museum along the waterfront. The long sandy beaches begin just south of the centre and stretch for kilometres, busiest in July and August; for quieter swimming the rocky coves at Currila and Kallmi, north of town, are within a couple of kilometres. Spring and early autumn bring the most comfortable weather for sightseeing, while the summer evenings are when the seafront bars and fish restaurants come alive. Democracy Square and the pedestrian streets around it are the natural place to start.
