Location and what to see

Getting there

Hotel Hersol stands on Rruga Kasem Durresi, a quiet street in central Durrës only a short walk from the seafront and the old town. Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa, the country's main gateway, is about 35 km away and reached in roughly forty minutes by car along the SH2 dual carriageway. A taxi from the terminal costs around 30 to 35 euros, agreed in advance; there are also scheduled airport buses to Durrës for about 480 lek that take around thirty-five minutes. If you land in Tirana first, frequent intercity buses and shared furgon minibuses link the two cities throughout the day for a couple of euros. Durrës train station sits under a kilometre from the hotel, though the Tirana line is being rebuilt and is not currently running, so buses are the reliable option. The hotel has free private parking nearby, so arriving by car is straightforward too. Once here, the centre is flat and easily walked.

What to see

Durrës is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic, and its highlights are all within reach on foot. The Roman amphitheatre, built under Trajan and the largest in the Balkans, is about a sixteen-minute walk south. From there it is a few minutes more to the Venetian Tower, which closes the surviving Byzantine city walls and is free to visit, and to the seafront promenade with its cafés and the port, where ferries leave for Bari and Ancona. The long sandy Durrës Beach and the quieter Currila and Kallmi coves lie one to two kilometres from the door, best enjoyed from late spring to early autumn. Summer weekends get busy with domestic holidaymakers, so start sightseeing early and save the beach for the afternoon. Set aside an evening for the lively streets around Sheshi Liria, lined with bars and seafood restaurants.
